I first posted this short visual commentary in January 2017. It was drawn in response to a xenophobic statement made in December 2016 by German chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking out against the rights of some Muslim people who choose to wear face-covering attire.
I hugely respect Merkel as a paragon of pragmatism and it shocked me to hear these words coming from her lips- perhaps something was lost in translation?
With terrible hindsight of the corona virus and the ubiquity of masks worn in public during the pandemic, it seems my simple graphic retort was right on the nose.
This was created in Animation Desk (Classic) for iPad on an iPad Pro, drawn at 6 fps, sans audio.
