Bear Walk Ruff and Smooth

Context

An illustration, from one of my children’s stories, adapted as a short looping animation to enhance the epub version of the book (please Right-Click the little playhead and choose the “Loop” option).

I included the blueline sketches as it’s nice to see working drawings.

This was drawn in Procreate Dreams, at 12fps.

Ape Work Day

Context

When my team relocated to the BORN Group studio in Manhattan’s Chelsea in spring of 2018, one of the charming quirks was an ape theme that permeated the premises: the iconic Banksy chimp headphones mural,  conference rooms named after Planet of the Apes characters,  and as you emerge from the lift, a large stuffed toy gorilla, Esmerelda.

Thus was the kernel of inspiration… what’s that ape’s day like, clocking in as the company’s simian ambassador?

This was created in Animation Desk (Classic) for iPad on an iPad Pro, edited together and audio added in iMovie.  It’s drawn at 6 fps.

"Namaste"

Context

A short looping sequence (please right-click the little playhead and choose the “Loop” option)- illustrating an amusing aside by my friend Brian. We are both fans of The Best Show, hence the “Namaste” reference.

Created in Animation Desk (Classic) for iPad on an iPad Pro,  drawn at 12 fps, sans audio.

Niqab

Context

I first posted this short visual commentary in January 2017. It was drawn in response to a xenophobic statement made in December 2016 by German chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking out against the rights of some Muslim people who choose to wear face-covering attire.

I hugely respect Merkel as a paragon of pragmatism and it shocked me to hear these words coming from her lips- perhaps something was lost in translation?

With terrible hindsight of the corona virus and the ubiquity of masks worn in public during the pandemic, it seems my simple graphic retort was right on the nose.
